RNLI OPEN 2009 |
Saturday the 18th July was the date chosen for the annual RNLI open competition at West Bay. Thirty four competitors signed on to fish the match which is fished in West Bay with the boundaries being from the end of the prom at the west end of West Bay to Port Coombe on east beach, the anglers were also able to fish the inner and outer harbour which includes the two piers. As the competitors signed on it was raining slightly, but thankfully by the time fishing started at 5.00pm the rain had stopped, the wind had died back and the sea had calmed down.
After the fishing the competitors returned to the Salthouse for the weigh in and free tea, coffee and biscuits. Sixteen of the competitors weighed in fish these included dogfish, silver eels, flounder & pout. The winner of the match decided to fish the outer harbour and managed to catch three flounder, the heaviest of which was 915 gms & five silver eel, The flounder also won him the flat fish pool. Dave lane also won the super pool which was £135. The winning lady on the night asked me at the weigh in "is it worth me weighing in this one small silver eel" as i always tell every competitor it is always worth weighing in what you have caught as you never know. The winning junior on the night was Oliver Mears who had recently represented England at the Home Internationals in Wales where he helped England to win the gold medal.
