39th CHESIL CHAMPS

The 39th annual West Bay Sea Angling Club Chesil Champs took place on Sunday 3rd April. Eighty seven competitors signed on at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park to fish, the anglers were allowed to fish anywhere between the Jurassic pier West Bay to the Flag Pole West Bexington, Though Freshwater beach is normally private it was opened up for this competition, with quite a few of the competitors deciding to fish the beach. The day started sunny with an easterly wind, but later on the wind veered round to the south west 3 - 4, luckily the rain held off to just after the weigh-in.

Out of the eighty seven competitors, twenty seven managed to catch some weighable fish, with many of the fish coming from Freshwater, Cogden & West Bexington beach. The fish were mainly Dogfish,  Flounder, Plaice, Rockling & Wrasse, one competitor managed to catch a small eyed ray of 1 kg 195 g which was the best fish on the day.

The overall winner of the competition was Mark Ayles from Weymouth with a weight of 1 kg 855 g just beating Malcolm Stote by 45 g, Mark's catch was made up of one dogfish and a small eyed ray. Mark also won the optional super pool which this year was worth £320. The top lady had to be drawn out of the hat of none of them caught weighable fish, the winner was Amber Wren. Top junior was Jake Preston with  a Rockling. The prize table went down as far as 20th position.

1st: Mark Ayles 1 kg 855 g Small eyed ray and dogfish.
2nd: Malcolm Stote 1 kg 810 g 2 dogfish. 
3rd: Dave Chidzoy 1 kg 760 g 2 dogfish & 2 plaice.
Top Lady: Amber Wren (drawn out of hat).
Top Junior: Jake Preston rockling.
Heaviest Flat Fish: N Nidd flounder 440 g
Heaviest Round Fish: Mark Ayles small eyed ray 1 kg 195 g
Super Pool:  Mark Ayles £320 payout.
